Music videos can create a very unique connection between an artist and viewers. Some music videos are just straightforward performance shots that show us the musician singing and performing. Others may tell a story or create images for us to experience while watching the video. And some videos use several techniques to help set a mood, tone or expression about the artist’s song or performance.

I have always been very impressed with Ethan’s music videos. Each song goes beyond just showing us a performer and instruments. In the beginning, perhaps videos such as that were necessary for us to establish Ethan’s role as a musician. Those videos highlight his talents playing the guitar, keyboard, drums and even the harmonica! However, most of the videos show us a little more insight into the world around us. This is true even in Ethan’s earliest videos.
In some cases, images in the videos are associated with the musical lyrics. Other times, it’s the beautiful scenery of New Zealand that draws our attention to the natural landscape. It may even be Ethan playing a role in the video beyond performing, to tell a story or create a scene that matches the thoughts and concepts expressed through music. The editing of these videos has always impressed me, as the special effects can really turn even a simple video into a “work of art.”
A song can hold a unique and special meaning to each listener. However, the images and pictures displayed in a music video can help define a mood, take us back to a special time or place, and create a feeling of peace for the senses. Listen, watch, and enjoy!
